The plango is the latest fruit to hit the British market, making its debut at the popular department store, Marks and Spencer, according to local British media. The fruit itself looks like a plum but tastes like a mango and is certain to entice taste buds in Britain where it is sold at nearly 50 baht apiece.

On April 4th, the Marks and Spencer website invited customers to taste the plango, a fruit grown in Thailand.

The Mirror, a British newspaper, challenged people to try and determine what sort of fruit the “Thai plango” is. The name itself is a combination of the word ‘plum’ and ‘mango’ reflecting the fruits unique characteristics. Agricultural scientists in Thailand spent four years developing the fruit.

The Mirror describes the fruit as having a texture like a plum, albeit slightly larger, with bright orange skin. Plangos will appeal to mango lovers and is sold at luxury department stores, like Marks and Spencer, at the fair price of 1 pound.

The CEO of Marks and Spencer said that they knew what their customers like and so looked for a new fruit with a satisfying taste, and the store was confident that the delicious flavor of the fruit would be well received.
