The 10-day longboat racing in the northern province of Phichit draws ten of thousands of visitors every year. In addition to the thrill of watching teams of rowers racing to become champion, the event features colourful rituals and performances. The races themselves are held in several provinces, but the one in Phichit has a long tradition. People in the province train for months ahead of the competition. The trophies and prize money, however, pale compared to the status the winners receive in their communities. One of the highlights is an elaborate ritual to worship boat nymphs before the race.
